Why Echo?

Echo is our name because it’s shorthand for Economy of Hours, and that’s exactly what we are. It’s also the name of our currency – one hour is worth one Echo.

Who’s it for?

Anyone and everyone. Echo brings together local people and local organisations – including startups and sole traders, established businesses and not-for-profits – to create a community-wide economy of hours where the more you put in, the more you get back.

Whether you want to learn something new, start a project or grow a business, you can tap into our bank of skills and services and start trading in time, not money.

How do I join?

Sign up online, and we’ll be in touch to help you figure out what you want and what you can offer. Please complete as much of your profile as possible to help us build a community of like-minded people and organisations.

Do I have to be based in East London?

At Echo, we believe in keeping it local. The Echo marketplace is open to everyone to join, but our focus is currently on working with people and businesses in our patch of East London, so you’ll find that most of our events and workshops happen here.

We plan to grow Echo by working with like-minded local partners who want to launch an Echo community in their own location. If you’d like to learn more about this, drop us a line.

Is there a charge?

It’s currently free for people and organisations to join and trade with Echoes.

What could I offer?

Our team can help you to identify the resources our members need from you, as well as what you can hope to receive. In the meantime, have a think about the following questions:

What to request:

  • What is the thing that never gets done?
  • If you had extra budget, what would you spend it on?
  • Is there a regular expense that you’d rather not pay for?
  • What do your clients need that you can’t currently provide?
  • What new skills would you like to learn?

What to offer:

  • What do other people come to you for help with?
  • Do you own a resource that isn’t getting used enough?
  • What is the thing that you do better than anyone else?
  • Are there skills within your team that don’t get used enough?

How do I get started?

We know you’ll want to start trading as soon as possible, so we give all new members a 5 Echo ‘overdraft’ to get them going, which you can start using right away. You can then start earning Echoes by adding your own offers to the marketplace, responding to requests and inviting your friends.

You can manage all your listings, trades and Echo transactions at the click of a button via your Dashboard (accessed by clicking on your profile picture at the top right of each page).

What if I can’t find what I need?

Our team specialise in helping organisations from small startups to sizeable corporates unlock skills and resources to trade, ensuring we can offer a wealth of skills and services to meet our members’ diverse needs.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the marketplace, you can post a request, or drop our team a line and we’ll do our very best to source it for you.

Will my trades be insured?

There’s simply not an appropriate policy available that will allow us to cover you, your staff, property and equipment. It’s your responsibility therefore to insure yourself and any resources you plan to share.

Additionally, members are required to confirm in every listing that they hold any specific qualifications and/or insurance to deliver the services they are offering.

How do I pay and receive Echoes?

It’s easy – once you’ve initiated, agreed and carried out your trade, you’ll be prompted to request payment or make a payment within your message thread. You can check on the progress of your trades at any time by heading to ‘My Trades’ within your dashboard.

Are all skills and resources worth the same?

Yes. It’s part of our philosophy to value everybody’s time equally. Every hour of any service or resource is worth one Echo. Very occasionally we may agree to value something differently, but purely for practical reasons.

What support can I get?

We’ve developed the Echo marketplace to let you trade directly with other members, but we’re available to help whenever you need us. If you’re having any problems or just want to chat, please get in touch.
