Hackney Wick based chef Mareli started The Tastery by baking for friends and family and hosting supper clubs in her home. With the support of Echo (via our Food++ programme last year), she’s now grown her passion into a successful business that fits around family life.
What made you start your business?
I wanted a job and income but on my own time and in my own way. I was struggling to find meaningful part-time work that fitted around family life.
Where was your business at before joining the Echo++ programme?
It was small but stable, but I couldn’t get it to grow beyond my word of mouth circle.
What’s your focus now?
I am focusing on cakes and catering.
What’s kind of things have you traded on Echo so far?
Through the Echo network, I provided a hearty meal to the local Hackney Wick community at Hub 67, in exchange for Echos and a bit of cash. I like the concept of sharing – I share my skills and time, but also get back connections with my neighbours and businesses in my community.
What advice would you give to a new business starting out?
Say YES to every opportunity, it doesn’t matter how small. Over-deliver if possible.
What have been real ‘light bulb’ moments for you during your business journey?
Be very sure of WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. It will influence every decision – what you do, how you do it, who you partner with on projects, how you invoice, what you charge, what you measure as success etc. Don’t try to do everything. Do one thing exceptionally well.
